About Vanastree

Vanastree founding members

Vanastree (meaning “women of the forest”) began in 2001 in the Malnad region of the Western Ghats of South India. What started as conversations around traditional seeds and forest home gardens, gradually grew into a wider network of women farmers, gardeners and seed savers connected through the biodiversity and food cultures of the region.

Over the years, the ideas and practices associated with Vanastree have travelled beyond the Malnad through seed sharing, publications and community exchange. The collective continues its core work through its seed savers’ network and the documentation and sharing of ecological knowledge.
